INTRO POST 1 - CAT

My name is Catherine, but most people just call me Cat.

I'm working on a BFA in Fine Arts (painting & drawing), and I'm an aspiring tattoo artist.

The tattoo industry has become over-saturated so it's been quite a challenge finding a place willing to mentor me :( it's also a male-dominated space but seeing more and more women-owned spaces has been inspiring though (LET'S GO ).

FUN FACT: I TATTOOED EVERYTHING ON MY LEFT ARM! & YES IT HURT...only a little

♡ MY ART
I'm currently working on curating the instagram account for my work. There's a bunch of old sketches and paintings on there, but I feel like I grew so much as an artist that I'd like to update it and make it feel more like myself.
(so if you do check it out, beware: it's a work in progress)

Music is my safe space, I listen to almost anything so PUHLEEEAASEEEE put me on :D

  • Understanding Patriarchy bell hooks
"Men who have heard and know the word usually associate it with women's liberation, with feminism, and therefore dismiss it as irrelevant to their own experiences."

MY IMMEDIATE THOUGHT WHEN READING THIS

Men tend to not realize most, if not all, systems created to oppress their emotional, mental, and physical safety were originally created by men oppressing women to make themselves feel more than, or better than. Eventually causing the cycle thats prominent today in teaching little boys to not cry, and to be angry- because being soft is being small, and yet they grow up a shell of themselves who cannot properly communicate and wishing somehow they could.

"To end male pain, to respond effectively to male crisis, we have to name the problem. We have to acknowledge that the problem is patriarchy and work to end patriarchy."
Growth and change are uncomfortable, and refusing to shine light on the issue will continue to worsen the problems at hand.

  • What Memes Owe to Art History Artsy
"Through humor, memes incite a collective reaction to everyday life as well as reveling in it..."

Laughter breaks awkward silence. A good laugh, or even a smile can lighten the mood. Sometimes that's needed, especially today. Memes bring people together.

"...memes are hardwired with an unpredictability"

Memes are always changing; from text on funny pictures, to audios over videos that had gone viral (especially on TikTok). You truly never know what you're going to get because of people's creativity.

  • Memes Are Our Generation's Protest Art VICE
"But when it comes to the anti-Trump memes, at least what shines through-beyond the sense of play-is indignation, the amusement of ridiculing powerful figures, and the comfort from collective coping."
I had a friend once, she was the closest person to me. Overtime I realized we bonded through trauma. I found a lot of peace in knowing someone related to my pain.

I think community is important. United we stand. With everything going on today, community is one of our strongest assets. Divided we fall.
"Even if you're scrolling past quickly, the point resonates."

Today's generation tends to have a short attention span due to "doom scrolling"; mainly TikTok's algorithm is to blame. However, because of that, there's constantly new, and sometimes recycled, information being pushed out. The accessibility to technology amongst almost all ages opens doors for communication. My mom isn't the most tech savy when it comes to social media, but she tries regardless; she's more in it for the entertainment. As she "doom-scrolls" on her lunch break, she'll quickly pause and watch a whole 1 minute video about whats going in the world simply because it resonates.
