Curatorial Activism and Intervention Post-Sam M.

 The Art of Activism-Chapter 2

1."Creativity isn't a product, it's a process."

This statement perfectly describes the true meaning of creativity. In a world mostly run by capitalism, artists musn't forget why they create art; art isn't always about making money, it's about making a statement.

2."Our creativity won't thrive if the only time we make for it is an occasional weekend, or between phone calls, emails, and "important" meetings."

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. Good things take time; If you want to create something impactful and filled with meaning, you must take time to properly craft and shape it.

Towards a Curatorial Activism by Dr. Maura Riley

1."Instead of being disheartened by the sad reality, it is perhaps more productive to be proactively antithetical: to misbehave, to talk back, while dedicating ourselves to disrupting the hegemonic discourse from within by showing the gaps in representation, ‘the blind spots, or the space-off, of its representations’."

This statement shows how the concept of misbehaving isn't always a bad thing, representing how one's decision to talk back or rebel can be the beginnig of positive social change.

2."In such cases, critical theory is not enough; we must re-examine cultural objects and social practices to understand the patterns of everyday life that shape the past and inevitably imprint the future."

Understanding the past is the only way to shape the future. If people don't analyze and learn from history, they can never progress and grow as a community/society.

Part 1 Questions:

1.An art internvention is a form of art that challenges established norms or is designed to raise awareness.

2.There are various ways artists can send out their messages, from making street art to hosting live performances.

3.If an artist forms a set habit and established schedule when making/designing their art, their process becomes clear. They'll have a definite plan to carry out when distributing their work and sending the desired message.

4.Curatorial activism is the process of organizing art exhibitions that tackle/challenge exlcusionary art-historical narratives.

5.Art spaces/exhibitions can expand art activism by hosting and featuring pieces that are catered to or made by marginalized groups.

Part 2: Art Intervention Idea

A problem I'd definitely like to tackle that's affecting the whole nation is the very existence of ICE. As the child of Nigerian immigrants, the situation regarding ICE is one I resonate with. Though I'm not necessarily consumed by fear or worry of being captured by these masked terrorists, I know they are commiting atrocities across certain states and have torn apart various families. Such a situation should not exist in the so-called "land of the free", and must immediately come to an end. This is why I've decided it would be ideal to tackle such a problem through art intervention.

As an aspiring comic artist, I've seen various comic artists draw anti-ICE art. I've definitely taken some inspiration, conceptualizing what kind of anti-ICE art I could do myself. The illustration would probably be one shared and spread online like my previous works, but I'm also open to the idea of creating something physical. Down below are some illustrations I have taken into account when designing my own piece:
