Memes As Resistance- Jamie Vasquez

Part 1: How can memes act as a form of resistance and advocacy

This Meme highlights the troubles of patriarchy to its society, mostly pressuring social norms onto society, and to follow a traditonal belief/culture of patriarchy. It is meant by stepping outside of society's box and to step forward into becoming your own person without meeting the standards of America... which is heavily influenced by patriarchy, not following social norms.

How memes function as protest and resistance?
Memes are known to be a certain type of entertainment, especially for a young generation like us. when it comes to memes, it is most certainly a way to cope with societies problems and look for others who has the same stance as us and perspective based on the event/problem. it is a easy and funny way to get to a lot of people, grabbing their attention without even writing out a whole paper or a paragraph explaining about the troubles such as patriarchy. sometimes, a way to speak up about patriarchy isn't always going to look super serious, it is fun and useful to use memes as a way to project your voice.

What is Patriarchy?
Patriarchy is the practice of power and hold onto people, usually pushing traditional and social norms on those who choose not to follow it. it is mostly indulged with a political party, also mostly with men, pushing agendas onto others especially onto women, believing that they are in control of every single person that they come across. it is also seen to be reinforced within todays society through school, families, traditions and even beliefs.

Bell Hooks & Patriarchy
Bells hooks in her book often describes patriarchy as a huge factor when it comes to white supremacy and capitalism. while these systems tend to work together, they tend to push stronger agendas onto society, breaking the comfort of those in their comfort zone. also known as pushing norms that not everyone chooses to follow. These people are known to push a "change" onto those who think they need but are only destroying a society even more through an evil use of power instead of the good.

While this happens, it affects our daily lives through family, school and even beliefs if followed by family or yourself. most of the Times, boundaries are set and social norms tend to be kept in place by a higher power in our government.
