The Art of Activism - Chapter 2 Quotes & Responses

"To be an artistic activist, it helps to have a creative habitat. This habitat is a place where we can cultivate, grow and replenish our creativity for the rest of our lives"

-Being an artist with an idea of being an activist, it definitely helps with being able to come up with ideas on how we can spread the word of what we want to say with our art work, finding a place in our community where we can come together as a community and to be able to showcase artworks that is able to cultivate and to be able to express our stands on political and economic problems.

"A good creative process is what's behind any successful artistic activist piece But it's important to remember that process is just that: a process, and the point of a process is a progression toward a goal ."

-with this quote, I feel like it Is something important that is mentioned in the book, to be successful in an art, you need to have a process. I feel like as a artistic person myself, I struggle to find the good in my process and I feel like I need to rush myself, but through a process it is something that collects your ideas and it is something that creates your final piece.

Towards a curatorial Activism - Quotes & Responses

"So, again, what can we do? Instead of being disheartened by the sad reality, it

is perhaps more productive to be proactively antithetical: to misbehave, to talk

back, while dedicating ourselves to disrupting the hegemonic discourse from

within by showing the gaps in representation,"

- with this quote, it is something that talks about being the person who talks back and speak up about what they believe in what is right. id say it is something that its important to do as a society.

"This will

involve rethinking methodologies and iconographies for what they say, and do not

say, about the constructions of race, gender, class and nation. In such cases,

critical theory is not enough; we must re-examine cultural objects and social

practices to understand the patterns of everyday life that shape the past and

inevitably imprint the future."

- With this quote, I agree with what the author says. although everyday we may not understand what has happened throughout our society and our community, it is only better to pay attention to it and to change the patterns everyday in our lives to be able to change the routine and to be able to share our voices out loud.

Part 1 Questions -

What is an art intervention?

an art intervention is a creative action that interacts with the publics such as displaying a work in public such as cafes, museums and more. it can also publicly address environmental, social and political issues.

Artists can inspire change through their artwork by creating messages that raise awareness to the community without having to speak, they also tend to challenge social norms and foster to create a society that is more attentive to their community.

What is Curatorial activism?

Curatorial activism is the practice of organizing art exhibitions with the goal of including artists who have been historically marginalized, such as women and artists of color, challenging to dominate narratives in the art world. it is to promote diversity and equity.

Art spaces and exhibitions can expand art activism by providing platforms for artists to showcase their work, engage with the community and to promote social change. it fosters creativity, inclusivity and even dialogue allowing voices to be heard and to be encouraging to others.

Art intervention Idea

For my idea, I want to create an art work based on immigration. as a person who was raised by two immigrants and with the society we live in now, I feel like its super important to speak up for what is right and knowing our rights as HUMAN BEINGS in the same world as others, to know that people deserve and belong to be here for a better life that they search. I look forward to create an art work that focuses on the problems of discrimination based on people of color and their citizen status. I believe it is something that builds me as a person and for others as-well, it is what builds us, our community! our shops, our restaurants, our nail salons, hair salons, our construction workers that build our nice complex houses, our people who strive to work in the beaming sun to provide fresh fruits to be in supermarkets. I believe we pave something big along the way for this community. I also want to create a google form below my art work, requesting for words of encouragement for those who are going through difficult situation such as having a loved one in detention camps and others who are in complete fear of their future not knowing where they will be next.

This is an artwork inspiration for my work that I want to do
