Summary/Inspiration
This piece/poster is meant to catch the eyes of the viewer, making them reflect on whether the scene of an "officer of the law" choking out a defenseless immigrant is truly "heroic". As the child of Nigerian immigrants, the current situation regarding ICE is something I feel connected with. Though I don't necessarily live in fear of being detained, I know they're many immigrants/POC's who do. I've heard various people, even close friends, claim that ICE officers are simply "doing their jobs". That when they killed folks like Renee Good, it was because of "unruly" behavior. In truth, the current ICE is not doing their job. It's one thing to peacefully detain actual illegal immigrants, it's another to brutalize any person of color suspect of being an immigrant. Most members of ICE also don't care about making change within America, but simply want to feel the thrill of using their authority and "prowess" to wound whoever they please. My art speaks against that. I look forward to the day when ICE stops doing what it's doing and life within this nation starts looking normal once more. The piece and its overall design is inspired by various forms of anti-ICE art I've seen over the past few months. A lot of comic illustrators I'm fond of have made creative and amazing pieces of art featuring pop culture icons/characters fighting against ICE officers, and I had such artworks in mind when creating this poster. I initially thought of drawing myself alongside a few characters(particularly anime ones) dismantling ICE members, but later felt such an idea lacked true originality despite how creative it sounds. I eventually decided to make a more straightforward piece that had a direct, stern message, allowing for audiences to immediately reflect/discuss upon viewing. I'll eventually make a few physical copies of this piece to post around both Jersey City and Bayonne, and have already shared it digitally on media platforms such as Instagram and DeviantArt.Powerpoint:
