FINAL INTERVENTION - AFTER WE KNEW - VALENTINA PENA

After We Knew

Dance Performance + Poem

For my Final Intervention, I decided to continue working based on my last project called Global Warming and make a video of a dance performance showing two side, utopia and dystopia. I started the video where me and my friends are in the “Perfect World” which we picture it to be, we just do not see it that way. If we looked at Earth as personal, as truly ours, we would care for it better. Change starts with small every day actions, and when people come together in that action, it grows in power. Also I brought up that utopia is not a place we are to live in but a tool that can be used to seek for action. “he didn’t want us to trade in our world for his idealized version… we had already been introduced to the idea of a different way” (Duncombe Lambert Ch. 9). My project does this by bringing the picture of a perfect world only to turn attention back to our present responsibility.

I did my performance in the lobby of my apartment building. This reserved setting had residents run into the work while going about their day. Although no one came up to us, we were probably too focused in what we were doing that they didn’t want to bother, but people did stop, look, and observe. That silent interaction became a part of the project. It played with the idea that people see environmental issues but do not always get involved. This project very much plays into my professional goals as a graphic designer and visual artist. It was a challenge that I put on myself since I’m not used to this type of performances, I gout out from my comfort one and it felt great seeing the results. It adds to my portfolio which shows that I am able to produce not only visually appealing pieces but also pieces that are conceptual and socially aware. I combine illustration, performance, and activism which displays my ability to communicate across complex ideas in a creative way which is key in design and storytelling.

The video installation of Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger’s Perennial Land: The Data Forest was my inspiration throughout the semester and very present in my work which shows environmental issues through visual media. They showed me how data, nature, and art can be brought together to present very powerful experiences. I didn’t search for any other artists since I connected to them a lot and got inspired to spread the message they used in my own work.
