Final Intervention Helina Boatwright

This project is about racial profiling and will raise awareness of it. When you have a benign racial profile, you feel singled out and alone. It being judged on your race, which isn't something you can change or control, and that experience can be really alienating. Because at the moment you feel like you did something wrong, but you did nothing but be you, being profiled makes you feel like that is something wrong within yourself, and it isn't, it's just that people have this preconceived notion about what they expect you to be cause you look a certain race.

I’ve chosen this form of project because my brother told me about an incident he had at Acme and how they called him to the side to check his book bag and make sure he didn’t take anything.

My form of outreach was alking up to people and asking them the question but most people didnt have the time to stop and write it down so I asked for them to send it thourght Instagram. I sure people probly forgot. I sent the the question to their accout. I only got 4 responce and two of the 4 say they havent experance it an gave there reason as to why other might have. (Have you ever felt racially profiled, and if you have, can you please share the story about it? If you have not, why do you think that is?)

That they are not alone when it comes to being tacky profiled, and that it happens more the more they know it’s not their fault, but instead it’s the people who have clouded perceptions, even when the evidence is right there.

The first artist is Nick Cave. He created Sound Suits after the beating of Rodney King. He figured if the police had not been able to profile Rodney racially, he still would be alive. So he made these Sound Suits that cover a person from head to toe and hide the wearer's race, gender, and identity. The suit is meant to disorient the Profiler, remove bias, and force people to see past stereotypes.

The next artist is Nikkolas Smith, who is an art activist whose work focuses on racial injustice, police violence, and black identity. His most famous piece is Martin Luther King Jr, wearing a hoodie, he did this to show that even someone like MLK can be racially profiled based on appearance. What inspired this piece is what happened to Trayvon Martin. He was killed because he was racial profilrd based on what he was wearing and his skin color, since he fit the description they saw as a threat that needed to be taken down.

This artist is Tatyana Fazlaizadeh, an activist artist who created america is black to show how black people are treated in different settings. How people of color can be seen as out of place just because they are just exiting can lead to judgment and questions, and the mural shows this is how America has been and how it will always be because it an commonly diverse place.
