Hi my name is Ivana , Age 27, senior at NJCU and Graphic Design major. This photo was an artwork I drew and made by hand in one of my classes, that I admire. I am Latina, I own a 1yr old chihuahua girl, and I like to dress up and travel. I am passionate about makeup , nails, cooking and drawing. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister, originally from NYC and moved to Jersey at 15 yrs old. I'm not an activist but I enjoy debates and my artistic adventures includes animation, pottery, painting. Some political causes I am already familiar with is probably the dilemma with ICE Agents, global warming, the battle of gasoline and how electric cars are improving.

This artwork "The Tip of the Iceberg" by Gwenn Seemel is one political art I find inspiring and admirable. I choose this because trash ending up in the ocean is the one of the reasons why we have global warming, and people are careless where there trash goes. The artwork is a beautiful scene, the art symbolizes the focus to something beautiful away from the focus of the ugly appearance under the sea.
Part 2 Reading Response:
1- Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks (linked below and available as a pdf on Blackboard)https://archive.org/details/UnderstandingPatriarchy
2 quotes and short response
"Patriarchy is a political-social system that insists that males are inherently dominating, superior to everything and everyone deemed weak, especially females, endowed with the right to dominate and rule over the weak and to maintain that dominance through various forms of psychological terrorism and violence" (Pg 1)."
"Patriarchal thinking shapes the values of our culture. We are socialized into this system, females as well as males. Most of us learned patriarchal attitudes in our family of origin, and they were usually taught to us by our mothers. There attitudes were reinforced in schools and religious institutions (Pg2)."
Meaning that people were taught into their families through generations of the roles they have for their kids when it comes to females and males. Everyone has different rules and males have favoritism and more power than females. The author speaking explains that, how she felt, describes about her parents and her story about the things she was taught.
They mention how patriarchy stands for all emotions except fear, of repressed thinking and complete blind obedience. Shaping kids in families to learn patriarchal thinking and was taught through religious schools. Males having dominance and if the household was only lead by the female , there is no patriarchal thinking being taught due to no male being present.

"Through an ironic and playful treatment of a fragmented subject, memes break down high and low culture, disrupting ideas of authenticity and originality."
"Like performance art of the ’60s, memes are hardwired with an unpredictability and a “hackable” interface or template that can be easily appropriated and overwritten—anyone can make a meme."
Given the quote, it explains why memes today are so popular today and the most common mediums used in our digital resources. Usually used for a hilarious reaction, or a political slogan through artwork and it has deep roots in our post internet world and pre-digital art historical canon mentioned in the article.
Not a lot of people like memes only because it levels the gap between artist and audience, disrupting the ideas of authenticity and having no concrete info. about the origin. But Memes are very popular because it's a collective reaction to everyday life and gives a preview of people's attitudes in todays society during a given time period. For example, using Memes tend to go out the today of or the week when a scandal breaks out, it can be about a cheating scandal about celebrities or a shooting of an CEO. Memes determine people's mood and how it plays a part in people's lives and to show awareness.
2 quotes and short response
"Simple to make and simpler to distribute, they can communicate a stance or message at a glance and express the same feelings experts say are behind conventional protest art. "
"At their core, all memes, regardless of their politics, are a tool for expression. Memes help to articulate specific points, amplify ideas, and intensify emotions,” Burroughs said. Something can be comedic or a joke and still be incredibly poignant.”
Activist memes described as a conversation for battling, resistance, and it's ability to be empowering in society. Can be used as an abuse of power and popular to express political opinions. Alot of our political memes have to do with our very well talked or popular presidents, or candidates that ran for president, or the injustices faced in our economy.
Mentioned that memes reflects us, helps justify our feelings of rage and fear, while filling that void of being alone. Sometimes one picture can have a better effect and a powerful outlook comparing it to just one simple page of text.
