Introduction Post - Faaria

Hi Everyoneeee!!!

I'm Faaria, and I am 24 years old, turning 25 in two weeks, yay. I’m genuinely excited because apparently that’s when your brain is fully developed. I’m really hoping that explains a lot. I am a comp sci major (AI is taking away all our jobs :0). I moved to the US about 5 years ago from Bahrain (an island country in the Middle East). Some things I enjoy are gaming, watching movies, documentaries, and shows, or watching anything really. I consume a lot of content. Other than that, I am really a boring person, and I do not have anything going on when it comes to art. However, when I am not overwhelmed with work and school, I enjoy writing little things about my life, feelings, personal experiences, and things that bother me deeply. I guess that also qualifies as some kind of art or artistic capability of mine.

One thing about me is that I’ve always been an activist, even before I had the language for it. Growing up, I was friends with people from Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan who were directly impacted by war and terrorism. I heard their stories of loss, displacement, and diaspora long before I ever saw these realities framed as headlines or political debates. Those experiences shaped how I see the world and made it impossible for me to look away when others are suffering.

Fun Fact about me: all cats love me no matter how feral they are.

Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks

“Blind obedience—the foundation upon which patriarchy stands; the repression of all emotions except fear; the destruction of individual willpower; and the repression of thinking whenever it departs from the authority figure’s way of thinking.”

“I tried to warn you. You need to accept that you are just a little girl, and girls can’t do what boys do.”

These quotes really gave me a chill down my spine because patriarchy makes people lose the little voice in their head that makes them question things. They become so obedient that they lose control over all their emotions and just give in to whatever the person in charge demands. This often happens due to fear and an imbalance of power. It starts young when little girls are told not to act, dress, or behave a certain way just because they're girls and not boys. This makes many women question their self-worth in their later years of life because they were conditioned to believe that they can't do this or are simply not meant to do it. Whereas if given a chance, most girls can do way better than boys, as they're more in touch with their emotions and come from a place of patience, responsibility, and loads of humility.

What Memes Owe to Art History

"Like modern art…our internet age moves fast, BT Infinity fast, and people are always looking for the next big thing and the next laugh. Jokes get old."

"Memes aren’t an innocent process—they carry serious political weight, and not always of the activist variety,"

Memes are so important for finding humor in serious issues that send a very profound message. They help people understand the gravity of the situations that are happening in today's world. At the same time, they could also be the reason for misinformation, rumors, and cancel culture. However, memes lose their shelf life after a certain period of time as they become too old or concentrated online. People have a very short attention span these days, and they move on to the next thing. This way issues can be overlooked in the modern day.

Memes are our Generation's protest art

"They can help bring attention to issues of injustices. They circulate in a way that keeps up with that social media flow of information."

“Memes are essentially 100 years of text art boiled down into your feed,”

Memes are easily understandable and bring attention to matters that are very important in the current society. Like the atrocities and injustices people face can be brought to light with just a picture with concise text on it. They circulate and bring new information to people. Memes also have history, and they condense all the information required to bring awareness to people in a digital format.
