Intro post 1 Juan Miguel "Juancho"

Yup, that's me

Yo! I'm Juan, but my friends call me Juancho. I'm a biology major, I'd love to be a zoologist, more specifically an ectiologist (fish scientist) or entomologist (bug scientist). I also want to be an art major. Science and art are my two biggest passions, I think they're both two sides of the same coin, two ways of understanding the world in a better way. Eventually I would love to merge these two interest of mine, either by becoming a scientific illustrator or by doing art related to natural life.

I was born here in the US but i spent most of my life in Colombia and a couple years in Argentina. I came back to north America in 2021 and I've working ever since. I started school last year because I wanted to do more than just work and work with no end goal in mind. I'm currently living with my family, studying during the day, working at night, with no free days (yay).

My biggest hobbies are drawing, watching cartoons, movies, playing videogames, working out and biking. I've been drawing ever since I can remember, but I really started to pursue as a passion around 2016 (when i was 15). I started by drawing characters from videogames and anime. Right now I'm at a point where I'm truly proud of my art and I'm exited to get better, I'm proud of my skill and I'll be happy to show you my current sketchbook (I always carry it with me)

I enjoy drawing people, buildings, characters and animals. I use brush tip markers, and inks, I don't like using pencils or doing sketches, I go in with inks right away. I also got into painting a couple years ago, I use acrylic on canvas. I'm also a digital artist, I use "Clip Studio Paint" as my main software, or procreate in my iPad. I do digital commissions and I've sold a bunch thankfully!. I've also sold a couple paintings.

Understanding the patriarchy bella hooks
"Separatist ideology encourages women to ignore the negative impact of sexism on male personhood. It stresses polarization between the sexes"
I've always agreed with this, blaming a whole gender, race or culture for a certain evil and then preceding to exclude them only promotes division between victims of said evil. It's harder for a group of people to unite against a common enemy that's clearly being an oppressor, when said group of people is divided by in fighting and throwing blame at each other. I've always thought that both men and women are the same, both amazing, both awful, both capable of good and evil, because at the end of the day we're all human, we all have the same capacity for great and awful thigs.
"Patriarchy promotes insanity, it is the root of the psychological ills troubling men in our nation."
I've never really had an awareness of what the patriarchy was until i read this article. Growing up I always felt excluded from other boys my age, because of dumb things like not liking super models, not liking football (soccer), not listening to "manly" music or not being violent. I've always been a softer person, specially as a child, I always wore my emotions on my sleeve and I was punished for it. For most of my life I felt that there was something wrong with me, that I wasn't the way I was supposed to be. In recent years I've learned a lot about myself and the world, I've had to consciously do a lot of unlearning of toxic ideas I integrated into my life, a lot that I used to believe and a lot that I still do.

What memes owe to art history Alice Bucknell
"In the post-internet world, nothing escapes the meme’s comic gaze"
We've all seen this first hand, in the Internet nothing is sacred. Tragedies, current events, celebrities, shows, games, people, streamer's clips. Everything is chewed by the Internet and spit back at us with new meanings, connotations that could have never been part of the original one. It's crazy to think about all the things that were considered scandalous and taboo in the pre Internet age, that are now normalized and we across by ever single day.
"memes are hardwired with an unpredictability and a “hackable” interface or template that can be easily appropriated and overwritten"
Memes are as viral and popular as they are, because of how "hackable" and reiterative they are, the barrier of entry is so low that anyone can add their thoughts and opinions in a meme in less than 10 minutes. I've realized as I have gotten older that a lot of the edgier memes I've seen, were political propaganda all along. Not all of them of course, but a lot of those edgier memes my friends would share for a quick laugh had political messages that scaped me and my friends at the time.

Memes Are Our Generation’s Protest Art Sage Lazzaro
"But when it comes to the anti-Trump memes at least, what shines through—beyond the sense of play—is indignation, the amusement of ridiculing powerful figures, and the comfort that comes from collective coping"

The Trump administration  has been a mess since it's been in power, lately more than ever. With acts of corruption so blunt and shameless that it makes us question our trust in the institutions that are supposed to serve us more and more every day. I feel that me and a lot of people of my generation feel more hopeless and scared each day, when i see meme sharing these feelings i feel less alone and less scared, because I can see that unsatisfaction I feel is shared with millions of people, that gives me hope that things might change for the better in the future.

"The subjects of these activist memes, Jasper noted, are villains, and that’s a key part of protest art in general"

I like seeing this fact stated in such a simple and direct way, it's crazy to me that people can defend and approve of figures that are so blunt and transparent in their villainy, so I'm always happy when I see memes poking fun at them and showing them in their true colors.

My favorite artist is Hirohiko Araki, mangaka behind Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, not only because of his technical skills, unique story telling, amazing characters and themes, but because of how he's always challenged societal conventions in his writing and art. He's always challenged ideas of masculinity, fashion, faith and humanity.
