Love is in the Air, Banksy 2006

Graffiti is a form of communication, often considered vandalism. Some artists, like Banksy, use this media in a way to convey messages through simple pictures. Love is in the Air appeared in 2003, after the Israeli government built a wall to separate the Palestinian minority from the Jewish Israeli population. The image shows a protester throwing a bouquet of flowers instead of a molotov which is usually used in those circumstances. Their message calls for flowers instead of violence, Love not War.

8 Artists Using Their Creativity to Drive Activism | Global Citizen

"Art is one of the most powerful tools we have for communicating those stories, sharing lived experiences, and fighting for global change in the mission to end extreme poverty and the systemic causes that drive it"

Art becomes a bridge between personal experience and collective action. It inspires empathy and moves people to challenge systems created to punch down the pyramid of injustices.

"These artists embody the transformative power of art as a guiding light for social change...they ignite conversations, challenge norms, and inspire transformation"

Activist artists guide that push that society needs in order to listen and create change. They inspire others to either do the same or something similar by creating an almost domino effect.

An Introduction to Activist Art|The Collector

"They usually have a common denominator, which is a focus on political and social issues with the intent to change or influence public opinion by confronting people with an unjust or problematic status quo"

Art can be an intention form of resistance or activism. It' is meant to spark reflection by confronting the audience. It pushes people to imagine.

"The broad term activist art, encompasses a great variety of artists, art forms, and objectives"

Art can be anything. Activism can be anything. Activist art can be anything from books, to signs, to videos, to posters, to murals, etc.

The Art of Activism|Duncombe & Lambert

"When used by activists, the phrase 'stepping off the curb' refers to the moment that one leaves the sidewalk and enters the street to join a protest, but in a broader sense it means making the step from passive indifference to active engagement"

This reminds me the phrase "a stepping stone", or milestone. It's a point in one's life where they realize there's more to this. One of the first things that stood out to me because of it's simplicity, yet it goes much deeper than that. It truly becomes an awakening almost when you realize how you suffer and how those around you suffer as well. On top of it all, is recognizing the system at play and the pyramid of suffering in place. One step forward starts the revolution within yourself.

"...being active just seemed the natural response to the conditions of her life"

Realizing how differently society shapes everyone comes with questions. Why? Why can't a black, lesbian, woman live as freely as a straight white woman, or man? Intersectionality easily slips through the cracks when it comes the "rules" set in place by these interlocking systems. As mentioned in class, we punch down the pyramid, it became a way to divide everyone as a whole. These systems have existed for centuries, so it's become engraved for generations to live accordingly, while others are barely aware.
