What is art activism? Post 3- Johana Lira

 1. List 3 examples of activism in your community we discussed in class.

The students going to protest against ice.

The super bowl, bad bunny's halftime show.

Signing a petition.

2. What is Art Activism? Choose one art work from the readings. Research the artwork and explain who, what and why the work is an example of art activism. Include an image and information about this artwork in your short response on the blog.

Art Activism is when artist uses this medium to express their opinions about inequalities we live in a day-to-day basis, they are made in hopes of making a change in the world and open the eye of other people that do not see the injustice. The main goal of artist is to be heard and protest in a peaceful manner, some of the art can be to confront, sexism, racism, war, patriarchy, nepotism, and many more inequalities. Art is another for of expression, like for example, Paula Rego's 'Abortion Series' from 1998, she made this series in response to a failed referendum to legalize abortion in Portugal in 1998. Her artwork had such an impact that in 2007 the second referendum was approved and abortion was legalized.

3. Add your quotes from the readings to your blog post. Use your quotes to explain your chosen artwork.

  • The Art of Activism
- "When used by activists, the phrase “stepping off the curb” refers to the moment that one leaves the sidewalk and enters the street to join a protest, but in a broader sense it means making the step from passive indifference into active engagement"

Some people will or will not have the will to speak up for what they believe is good. W e can be "stepping off the curb" and not wanting to be involved with anything that is happening around the world and foe me that is fine, but if we do not agree with the systems laws e can do something to break those laws, no matter if it's a small change.

- "Ahmed* recalled walking into a fast-food restaurant as a young child with his mother. Dark-skinned and wearing a hijab, his mother was first ignored and then treated disrespectfully by the people behind the counter. As a child, Ahmed didn’t understand the politics of racism and Islamophobia, but he was hurt, ashamed, angry, and knew this treatment was wrong. This experience set him on the journey to where he is today: the leader of a Muslim American human rights organization".

I feel like all of us can relate to this because all of us are descendants from immigrants either we want it or not, there has to be a time where we did not understand how our parents were being treated by other people just for the fact of not speaking english, and trying to translate whatever the situation was for our parents. I feel none of us should have to experience this more if we are children because we do not have to be racist with one another knowing we are all immigrants either we like it or not.

  • An Introduction to Activist Art| The Collector| by Stefanie Graf
- "The goal of activist artwork  can also vary widely. Works can challenge racism, sexism, authoritarian regimes or war"

The goal of artist may vary, some can use their works to open the eyes of other people about different types of things, it can be from racism that they've lived or heard of, sexism, or challenging patriarchy, or other stuff we are dealing with.

- " The collector's role shift's when art becomes activism"

The collectors point of view can vary, they can or may not have the same beliefs as the artist would, so they will have to choose wisely if the collectors have the same beliefs as the artist or not.

  • 8 artist using their creativity to drive activism

-" Through her works, Ono's legacy continues to promote peace, encouraging us to embrace compassion and unity in our collective pursuit oa a better world"

Thanks to Yoko Ono, we can now see that all her art works where promoting peace and making other people have compassion for one another, I really like the way she stud\d up for peace and made the public be more aware of all the stuff that need to change in the world.

-"A great example of this is in one of her piece's called, "The flag is bleeding #2" , where she utilizes her signature quilting technique to portray an African American woman on the American flag amidst scenes of holding on to her children as she bleeds".

I can tell that she is fighting for the undocumented people or the ones that are treated as criminals even though they are not. This quote really resonates with me because of all the things that are happening right now with ice and all the families that are being separated for them.
