Final Idea Post - Bell ݁ ˖α²˜π‘Ό⋆

ദ്ദി◝ ⩊ ◜.ᐟ Chapter 9: Utopia

1. "They resist and object to discussing their own success. It's as if they are afrid to allow these thoughts to enter their minds because acknowledging them will make it too difficult to return to the everyday reality of setbacks and struggle."

I think this quote speaks for itself. Fantasizing about anything has become more and more of a commodity that society capitalizes on. Every aspect of our lives has slowly grown to become more capitalized and subscription based that doing anything, or wishing to do anything, seems almost unobtainable. Or even farfetched. If we succeed in finances, we should be able to afford the house we dreamt of but in this day and age? Almost impossible. The immediate realization grounds us and reminds of of all the other bills, setbacks, and more work we have to do to achieve any of it comfortably.

2. "Given enough time, those in power may not even need the institution of law and the military as people normalize their own domination so completely that they expect it, accept it, and even ask for it."

I think this is much of what we're seeing now. A lot of what we find on social media, at least in my feed so far, is people from other countries asking why we as Americans aren't doing more in our current political climate. But, the majority did vote for what's happening. They "accept" and "ask" for this because rather than live within a society where everyone can thrive, because in their minds it is much more satisfying for them to suffer because in a weird convoluted way, to suffer is to earn.

α―“★ Final Idea:

Taking some inspiration from Yoko Ono's Instruction Pieces, as well as drawing on just the "interactive part of my midterm project, I'd like to create another interactive and participatory piece. While my midterm was focused on creating something meant to alleviate burdens as well as bring awareness to mental health, I think my final will be more focused on mental health in a more community aspect with an uplifting twist. I'd like to create prompts that engage a younger audience "advising" or speaking to an older audience in order create a cross-generational dialogue that emphasizes imagination and empathy in an uncertain time. Technically, the project is already being worked on and documented, and will become a small zine that can be passed around.
