The Art of Activism, Chapter 4:
1.) "As artistic activists, culture is the stuff we mine and the resource with which we build."
-All art is shaped by the artist's life experiences, which of course includes the culture they were surrounded by. I imagine any art I make in the future will be influenced by both my life here and my life in the Philippines.
2.) "As artistic activists we create Culture: creative forms we think best represent and communicate the ideas and ideals we would like others to share."
-The concept of shaping culture by using and representing culture fascinated me. Artists use and reuse the same material, yet somehow manage to make something more than the sum of its parts every time. That art will then go on to feed the next generation's creativity.
Interview with Shaun Leonardo - Performance, Pedagogy, and Philosophy
1.) "Why was I the one that was able to make it out?"
-I didn't want to move to America. I think about the people I left behind every day. But here, I have an opportunity to become the person they think I can be.
2.) "When you are marked by your difference, by your color, by your perceieved identity, you become this hyper-visible target. And it's in that hyper-visibility that actually you become invisible, because people see right through you."
-I am always conscious of how I appear when I'm in public. I'm not from here. I don't know how things work. It's easier to blend in, since there are immigrants like me everywhere in the city, but it isn't quite the same as being home.
