Chapter 4 "CULTURE" quotes
"Culture is necessary for our very survival. Without it we wouldn’t know who or what we are, nor how to function beyond rudimentary biological life."
I agree with this quote so much, I feel like without acknowledging culture, how can we connect with others? how can we strengthen our relationship through friendships and romantic relationships, how can we understand our peers around us? how can we enjoy them and their presence? Culture is something that is around us all the time, through restaurants, stores, newspapers, magazines and so many other things. it is something we need to survive and I feel like it connects with us emotionally and mentally. we wouldn't even know who we are ourselves. we get our personality from culture, our identity, our self perception through culture. it's definitely something that needs to be noticed more and talked about more. we pass by it day by day without even noticing. culture IS everywhere and in every single one of us.
"They can expand it, turn it inside out, and refute it, but the one thing an artist cannot do is create outside of it. If they could, the products of their labors would not only be meaningless to their audience, but also to themselves."
Reading this quote made me think so deeply.. when it comes to being an artists, most of the time we cannot create something without connecting it to culture.. we can change it, we can do whatever but never create it outside of culture. it is something that gives meaning to our work, gives the point and the reason to our work as-well. Culture is just more than acknowledging someone ethnicity or loving the persons food, clothing and music... but it's also a way to show art, show the meaning of YOUR culture. as an artist, I love showing my culture, Mexican culture throughout my artwork.. it represents me, who I am as a person, how I see myself and what do I think of myself especially as a young student that is of a Mexican background. I enjoy seeing art, in forms of painting, dancing, music and more through others culture, it helps me expand my horizons and makes me want to learn more about those who are around me.

Hispanic Executive | Interview with Shawn Leonardo
" Artists need to take in, to process, to decipher, to separate from the noise and create things that are beautiful and impactful to the spirit. Artists have to offer a different type of slowness to work against the speed of today."
I agree with this quote, with the things going on today in the world, we are often distracted by the chaos around us. through news and videos through social media, we are constantly bombarded by these horrific things that we see with our own eyes, and as artists, we need to use our talents and capabilities to be those voices that NEEDS to be HEARD. throughout these hardships and horrible tines, we cannot give up and just randomly throw away our beautiful ability to create art, we need to ACT on it by using our best selves and best abilities to create these work that will bring voices up. We can separate from the darkness and be the light that everyone else needs to hear and see.
" And so art wasn’t really within my vision as a child: I never quite know what inspired me, other than the moments where I did see and take in art. I don’t know what drove me to identify as an artist because it wasn’t within my familial background"
I relate to this quote so much, growing up I have never had an interest in art. I was always interested into science and even becoming a doctor. but through my personal experiences, It has changed me as a person and who I am today. half of my work comes from my mental state of mind and even the meaning behind each feeling I have felt throughout my life.. including my culture. At first, I would never have any inspiration to create my own works, it was just copying off something from the internet but until I have realized that the real art comes from what is inside of you, how you decide to display it on a canvas or on a paper.. maybe even on something else through music.. it is a way to find yourself and find who you actually are as a person. it doesn't comes to you quick and easy but it sure does find you along the way, through each hard and easy life moments.. even through the ones that hurt you the most. it is how we see ourselves and how we can maintain being ourselves and true.
