Performance Art Activism Post 7_Komal Das

Reading: Chapter 4 - Culture (from The Art of Activism)

Quote 1:

“Culture is not just a reflection of politics, it is a form of politics itself.”

Response:
This quote shows that culture plays an active role in shaping society, rather than simply reflecting it. Art, media, and everyday cultural expressions influence how people think and what they believe. I agree with this idea because performance art and visual culture often challenge dominant perspectives and encourage people to question social norms. Culture becomes a powerful tool for activism because it can reach people emotionally and intellectually at the same time.

Quote 2:

“Good activism doesn’t only inform, it transforms.”

Response:
This quote emphasizes that activism should create real change rather than just spreading information. I find this meaningful because people are more likely to act when they feel emotionally connected to an issue. Art, especially performance art, has the ability to create that emotional impact. It can move people beyond awareness and inspire them to reflect, empathize, and take action.

Interview: Shaun Leonardo (Hispanic Executive)

Quote 1:

“I’m interested in how the body carries knowledge.”

Response:
This quote suggests that the body can communicate experiences and emotions that words cannot fully express. In performance art, movement and physical presence become a way of storytelling. I think this is powerful because it allows the audience to feel the message rather than just understand it logically. It makes the experience more personal and impactful.

Quote 2:

“Performance creates a space where difficult conversations can happen.”

Response:
This quote highlights how art can open discussions about sensitive and complex issues. Performance art creates an environment where people can reflect on topics like identity, inequality, and mental health. I agree with this because art often makes people more open to thinking deeply and honestly about uncomfortable realities.

Performance Art Piece

Title: “Invisible Weight”

Inspired by Quote:

“Good activism doesn’t only inform, it transforms.”

Concept / Issue Addressed:

This performance focuses on mental health and invisible struggles, especially among students and young adults. It highlights how people carry emotional burdens that others may not see or understand.

Performance Description:

The performer carries a large transparent bag filled with objects labeled with words such as “Anxiety,” “Pressure,” “Failure,” and “Loneliness.” As the performance continues, the weight of the bag becomes harder to carry, symbolizing emotional stress.

Instructions / Script:

  1. The performer begins standing still with an empty clear bag.
  2. One by one, they place labeled objects into the bag. After each item, they pause and look at the audience.
  3. The performer starts walking slowly. Their posture gradually becomes more strained, showing the increasing weight.
  4. Audience members are invited to participate by either:
    • Adding their own written struggles to the bag, or
    • Removing an item from the bag
  5. The performer eventually stops and drops to their knees, struggling to hold the weight.
  6. If audience members remove items, the performer slowly stands up again. If not, they remain still.
  7. At the end, the performer looks at the audience and says:
“You can’t always see the weight someone carries.”

Audience Participation:

The audience plays an important role in shaping the outcome of the performance. Their choice to help or ignore the performer represents how society responds to people struggling with mental health.

Connection to the Quote:

This performance reflects the idea that activism should transform people. Instead of simply informing the audience about mental health, it allows them to experience the emotional weight and responsibility of supporting others. This creates a deeper understanding and connection to the issue.

Inspiration from Shaun Leonardo:

Like Shaun Leonardo’s work, this performance uses the body as a way to communicate meaning. The physical struggle of carrying the bag represents emotional pain, making invisible struggles visible. It also creates space for reflection and conversation, similar to how Leonardo’s performances engage audiences with difficult topics.

Final Reflection:

This piece demonstrates how performance art can be a powerful form of activism. By combining movement, symbolism, and audience interaction, it turns a personal experience into a shared one. It encourages empathy, awareness, and action, showing how art can create meaningful social change.
