Chapter 9
"Many activists and artists operate under this premise: that the biggest problem we face is that most people don’t understand The Problem. And, since most people don’t understand what’s wrong, it is our job to tell or to show them. This may be true in some cases. But in most instances, people know something is wrong because they are suffering, or are witnessing suffering."
R: With this quote, It is something that relates deeply to me and a bunch of other people. with the things going on in the world, it is hard to cope and to indulge in these every day stories and news headlines, fearing for our lives and not being able to live a state of mind that is peaceful and reassuring. As a person who has already gone through a difficult situation upon immigration and with ICE I can say it is truly something that disturbs your everyday actives, not being able to leave that constant reminder or constant thought that your family is in danger, even if they don't realize it so much.. its hard to live in a world in a constant chaos but its a way where we can talk, even through out our sufferings, our sufferings can bring awareness to others who may not know of this events or series of events that keeps on happening but it is a way where we can talk despite of our fears and amongst other things.
"Changing the world is very hard work. As artistic activists, we diveheadlong into the ugliness of the world that most people try to escape. We are up against the most powerful forces on the planet. We losemore battles than we win. And the struggle is a long one. To do this work day in and day out we need motivation. We need to constantly remember why we are doing what we are doing."
R: With this quote, it is something that really stood out to me while reading this chapter... changing the world is no easy task and it requires running into people and running into ugly series of events. it takes a leap of faith to be able to talk about whatever we choose to speak up about and to know with what type of people we are going to deal with, criticism we are going to receive and other things that will try to discourage us into stop working for what we want to talk about, bring alive. We are always against people with more "power" more "force" and as people who goes unnoticed or seen as less important, its still useful to still use our voice, our talent, our existence into something that is completely worth fighting for. With these things going on, we really do need motivation and it is something that is needed very much, especially for each other.
Intervention Idea:
From my previous intervention, I decided to do something about immigration and the inspiration to keep going through.. in this follow up intervention, I have decided to do a painting, including the useful resource I have mentioned within my presentation, A immigration lawyer group ran by Women, Saveedra & Perez Law, from Virginia. I want to focus on this same topic within a painting, splitting 4 boxes, first box saying "STRONGER", along with something in the background that represents fear or something that represents strength, second box that says "& FEARLESS" with a design of a broken glass or shattered glass Box three that says "TOGETHER" with a design in the background of a monarch butterfly, that represents freedom, and lastly the fourth box that says " There is still hope" or "There are still supporters" that highlights the immigration group, following along with bright colors, and encouraging messages around the section the box, proving information for people to be able to contact the immigration lawyer group if needed.
I am wiling to display this in a place like a cafe or somewhere in public while also being able to print out copies of my own artwork to post around School and other outside places like trees, public buildings and public places like cafes, parks and even malls.
