Post 8: The Final Idea

 Chapter 9 Quotes:

"In short, utopia is not a place we will ever reach, but is rather a space that helps us to think about where we want to go"(pg. 323).

  • Uptopia is not meant to be a place, but a call to action and inspiration. It's meant to be a place that we would like to imagine and collectively actively work towards. That's how progressive action works, though, especially at its best, which is having an image and goal in mind.

"Utopia gives us a direction; it orients our compass. No matter where we are or what we are doing, it gives us a point to look to on the horizon, enabling us to see different paths available, and orient ourselves"(pg. 335).

  • As I had stated above, Uptoia is not this delusion, but a call to action. A goal that lets us know what direction we'd like to go in and do it. Each person has their own view of utopia, but collective action gives the opportunity to work together to create the ultimate goal.

The final: "Sunlight."

1. Go outside and stand where the sunlight is visible.

2. Set a timer for one minute and close your eyes, facing the sun.

3. Take a breath, ground yourself, and feel the warmth on your skin.

4. Ask the sun for courage and strength to continue your day or the struggle you're facing.

5. Just be, exist.

6. Once the timer is up, thank the sun for its time and energy. You can even tell the sun I love you.

7. Continue on with your day, now with warmth.

This is meant to challenge productivity and an overworking society. This project forces you to stop and use what is most accessible around you, like nature and the sun. Connecting yourself to the moment and recentering yourself, even if it's for a minute. Despite constantly working, sometimes you need that minute to yourself (or with a friend). Caring for yourself and going against the capitalist grain, especially with your community, is an act of resistance.
