Una Mariposa estuvo Aqui

A Butterfly was Here

For my midterm for this class I was inspired by two artworks:

ʚɞ Estrellas Negras en la Via (Black Stars on the Road): It was a vehicular awareness campaign on Colombia created on 2003. The star (Figure 1) was painted on the place where somebody died due a car accident. Some of the stars had the names of the victims and their ages and others had the symbols of families to symbolize a family that lost their lives in an accident (Figure 2). However, the most effective and consist through all the versions of this campaign was the simples but eye catching black star with a yellow border. This strategy brought awareness and physical reminders of the people who are not here anymore due to this unfortunate accidents.

Additionally, if anybody is curious here is one of the commercials for this campaign.

ʚɞ UndocuBus: One of the artworks which are shown on our class book "The Art of Activism". The bus which displays in each side, one in English and the other in Spanish, the phrase "No Papers, No Fear: A Journey for Justice" (Figure 3 and 4).

Creation

I live in Paterson and unfortunately, ICE activity is the bread of each day. Leaving families where their family members are and probably getting the information when they are already on a plane. So, it made me question,  how these people we will know they are gone? How they can left a mark as a reminder they were there?
That's why I came up with "Una Mariposa estuvo Aqui // A Butterfly was Here". The silhouette of a monarch butterfly which is use to represent migrants. The center is empty so the butterfly can be used at its maximum. I see it in multiple uses; from being used on the side walk similar as Estrellas Negras from being little stickers.
This butterflies bring awareness about the current situation with ICE and remember the people who are not with us anymore (either physical or alive) because of them. The center as I said is an open space so people can used to put names of people that had been affected by the situation or even just put thoughts about it. This last one as a way of liberation as usually we are bombed constantly by a new tragedy, the butterfly serves as a space to pause and think.

Here is the image of my project:

"Who, after all, can be enraged at a butterfly?"
